New York Governor Kathy Hochul Announces Large Scale Increase In Law Enforcement Within Subway System

This Sunday, Governor Kathy Hochul joined Brother Fatiyn Muhammad and Jennifer Jones Austin on WBLS&rsquo;s Open Line. Governor Hochul, just a few days after announcing that she is sending 750 National Guard members along with 250 members of local law enforcement to administer bag checks and other security precautions in the New York City subway system.

According to NY.gov, adding the National Guard and increased police presence on the subways is a part of a <a href="https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/governor-hochul-announces-five-point-plan-protect-new-yorkers-subway">five-point plan</a> laid out by Governor Hochul&rsquo;s administration. This five-point plan includes &ldquo;surging State personnel to assist NYPD bag checks, a new program bill that would permit transit bans for individuals that assault other passengers, adding new cameras to protect conductor cabins, increasing coordination between District Attorneys and law enforcement, and increasing the number of Subway Co-Response Outreach (SCOUT) teams throughout the system &ndash; which will operate in addition to the existing Safe Options Support (SOS) teams.&rdquo;
During the interview Governor Hochul addressed concerns about adding law enforcement to the subway system and how that might feel for New Yorkers who &ldquo;have a complicated relationship with law enforcement.&rdquo; Hochul responded by saying &ldquo;I understand the concerns you're raising and what I want to do is make sure that the people who live in the black and brown communities who disproportionately use the subway &ndash; because the people who use the subway don't have their own vehicles often times and they're getting to their jobs, whether it's a low wage job or a high wage job, and they're using it more to get their children to school, they're using it to &ndash; seniors use it to get to their doctor's appointments. It is really the lifeline of our whole region. And I want to make sure that people have a strong sense of safety because otherwise they will not go on.&rdquo;
Fatiyn Muhammed highlighted previous subway incidents, then asked &ldquo;how did we get to the point of putting National Guards in and what will be the protocol in stopping and searching individual bags?&rdquo;
To which the Governor said &ldquo;The National Guard is only there to supplement the work of the NYPD, which is the entity primarily charged with protecting the subway. We also have MTA Police. We have State Police. They have been around, but I just wanted to show more of a focus in our main transit hubs to free up the NYPD to go into stations. So, it is more of a just a physical presence where you can see &ndash; if you're feeling anxious and you feel safer when you see someone that could protect you if you need help. If you need help, someone is there. And the other program we had would require going to the Budget, which we don't have the resources right now. I could deploy these individuals immediately. And why wait until the Budget process is over months from now? I needed to take immediate action. And then leaders have to do that sometimes. That's the situation. We had an unusual spike of crimes, high profile crimes, frightening crimes. Everyone's thinking that could have been me. And they may be deterred from going on the trains and using the subway, and that's exactly the opposite of what we want to have happen. We want people to feel safe and be safe.&rdquo;
Hochul went on to address questions about homelessness on the transit system and potential funds for housing the unhoused, when Brother Fatiyn asked &ldquo;Do we have more shelter space? More resources coming out for the homeless coming from the State funding coming into the city to help the homeless situation here as we deal with the migrant situation as well?&rdquo;

&ldquo;Yes&rdquo; Hochul said, explaining &ldquo;part of it is putting up shelters for the migrants. And we have. The State has supported the city between last year (and) initially $4.3 billion to give them a safe place to stay until they can get on their feet, which is what we have to do. We have no choice right now. They have come here. We do not want people on the streets. It's not good for our city. It's not good for our residents, not good for the migrants. So, we have been spending an enormous amount of money to make sure that we can take care of the vast majority of them.
And while some may have left the shelters and around the streets, the opportunities for us to get them jobs are there. We're trying to get them processed. They can get work authorization after a certain amount of time. And ultimately, the main objective is to get them into jobs, so they're not on the subway trains having to pedal for people to give them contributions or to sell candy. There's a lot of that with young kids selling candy on the subways. We're just trying to calm things down and get them into places where they can be safe. And so, that's our number one priority here, is the safety and security of our passengers.&rdquo;

Actress Carrie Bernans was<a href="https://apple.news/A21yApsMWRHGRni-jxu5X9w"> reportedly </a>critically injured in a hit-and-run in New York City on Monday, (New Year&rsquo;s Day).
She was one of eight people injured after a car crashed into a dining area of the Manhattan restaurant Chrip. After the crash took place, the driver of the car reportedly reversed out of the restaurant and crashed into another car before the police stepped in.&nbsp;
Bernans&rsquo; mother, Patricia Lee, gave an update on her condition on Instagram and shared some graphic photos of her daughter. &ldquo;She&rsquo;s still in so much pain and can&rsquo;t answer calls at this time, but appreciate the messages. This was a traumatic incident,&rdquo; Lee said. &ldquo;Please keep Carrie in your thoughts and prayers. She&rsquo;s in so much pain but healing&hellip; It ended up knocking her unconscious and pinned her under the stand. She was under it unaware of what was happening.&rdquo;&nbsp;

The &ldquo;Black Panther&rdquo; actress suffered a few broken bones, chipped teeth, and fractures, her mother revealed in the post. &ldquo;Amidst the chaos of the New Year&rsquo;s incident, she&rsquo;s holding onto an immense sense of gratitude for life itself.&rdquo;&nbsp;
She concluded with, &ldquo;This setback hasn&rsquo;t deterred her belief that something remarkable is still being crafted by God. Despite the injuries sustained in the collision caused by a hit-and-run in NYC, she&rsquo;s filled with hope and faith in the unfolding of a beautiful new chapter. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she navigates this path toward recovery and new beginnings.&rdquo;&nbsp;

The history of New York City, Black music and WBLS are so intertwined that it&rsquo;s hard to discern where one timeline begins and the other ends.
As The Jackson Five&rsquo;s &ldquo;Dance Machine&rdquo; took over dancefloors and middle school lunchrooms alike (thanks in no small part to popularity of the Robot dance), Kool &amp; The Gang&rsquo;s &ldquo;Summer Madness&rdquo; found a home in a freshly minted FM station that almost never was.
Visionary politician and entrepreneur, Chairman Percy Sutton, spearheaded Inner City Broadcasting group&rsquo;s purchase of an AM radio station, WLIB, which later became WBLS, &ldquo;The Total Black Experience in Sound."
While WBLS was not in their initial plans, the legendary Hal Jackson convinced the group to &ldquo;look into the future&rdquo; and invest in the FM station that would become a staple of the Black community.
&ldquo;There would be no BLS if he had not brought this to my grandfather,&rdquo; says Keisha Sutton-James, granddaughter of the late Percy Sutton.&nbsp; &ldquo;They would babysit me in the station back when it was at 801 Second Avenue.&rdquo; The &lsquo;they&rsquo; in question were names etched in WBLS history like Ken &ldquo;Spider&rdquo; Web, Vy Higginsen, Fred Buggs, Dr. Bob Lee and of course, Frankie Crocker.
More than just a radio station, WBLS brought the music directly to the people, enriching their events and marking milestones in a city that was forging its identity in the post Civil Rights era.
&ldquo;I&rsquo;ll never forget attending the New York City Marathon and cheering on runners in Harlem,&rdquo; says Sutton-James. Her grandfather was instrumental in taking the annual race out of Central Park and making it a boroughwide affair. &ldquo;I remember McFadden &amp; Whitehead&rsquo;s &lsquo;Ain&rsquo;t No Stoppin Us Now&rsquo; blasting from the WBLS van motivating the runners.&rdquo;
As the WBLS airwaves penetrated and ping-ponged across the stone and glass towers of Gotham (thanks to innovations like the aforementioned van)you could feel Hip Hop&rsquo;s sonogram taking form.&nbsp;
Though Frankie Crocker wasn&rsquo;t an early supporter of the burgeoning art form known as Rap, his musical influence is still undeniable.
&ldquo;Once &lsquo;75 comes and the club scene starts to unfold, like Leviticus, Justine&rsquo;s and The Silver Shadow, that Black dance scene interacts with Frankie Crocker,&rdquo; says Bill Stephney, longtime media professional and committee member for the Smithsonian Anthology of Hip Hop and Rap. &ldquo;They fed off one another. MFSB&rsquo;s &ldquo;Love IS the Message&rdquo; is the quintessential WBLS dance record."
"All that Philly international stuff. It became one of those grooves you heard at parties where you had to dress up but the emerging DJS would extend the groove. A good part of why Hip Hop begins in New York is because of WBLS and Frankie Crocker. The reason that Herc, Bambaata, and Flash played different records and music was shaped in large measure by Frankie Crocker.&rdquo;
Hip Hop would have its full reveal on WBLS via Mr. Magic&rsquo;s &ldquo;Rap Attack&rdquo; show on Friday and Saturday nights. After producing his &ldquo;Disco Showcase&rdquo; on WHBI, Magic was recruited by Frankie Crocker to compete with rival station 98.7 Kiss FM. With a stable of DJs that included Marley Marl, Chuck Chillout, Pete Rock and more, Hip Hop&rsquo;s march to mainstream radio dominance began with these baby steps.
In addition to keeping their audience entertained, WBLS has excelled in keeping their listeners informed. Icons like Ann Tripp echoed the voice of the community during times of strife like the Central Park Jogger trial, where five young men were unjustly incarcerated. She pressed then mayoral candidate Micheal Bloomberg if he was going to compensate the exonerated five for the years of the lives they lost if elected. It is that kind of uncompromising journalism that has defined her tenure in radio and the mission of WBLS.&nbsp; 
Over the decades there have been many changes at WBLS, from ownership to on-air talent, even the meaning of the call letters (&ldquo;World&rsquo;s Best Looking Sound&rdquo; is one I recall, says Sutton-James). But one thing that remains steadfast is our dedication to bringing you the best in Black music.&nbsp;
So join us as we spend the upcoming&nbsp; year celebrating the major milestone of reaching 50 years in radio, serving New York City and beyond. We will be revisiting all of the events, like Circle of Sisters, the artists whose careers began on our airwaves and so much more.&nbsp;

Married to Medicine star Dr. Jackie Walters comes under fire after clips of her resurfaced where she accused pregnant Black women of not being taken seriously by medical professionals because they cry wolf and are dramatic.

In the three-year-old clip, Dr. Walters said, &ldquo;Sometimes as African American women, we&rsquo;re a bit more dramatic. In that, you go the doctor and you complain and you complain and you complain, and you&rsquo;re not taken seriously &rsquo;cause you cried wolf the entire pregnancy.&rdquo;

She went on to say, &ldquo;As African American women, we want to also make sure you&rsquo;re being serious with your doctor and not playing the game so I can take you off work. Because then, we see you 25 times in the pregnancy, it&rsquo;s hard to believe that there&rsquo;s a true problem when there&rsquo;s a true problem.&rdquo;

Reality TV Star Dr. Jackie Walters Receives Backlash For Comments About Black Pregnant Women

Singer-songwriter-producer <a href="https://www.wbls.com/wbls-news/t-pain-to-receive-legend-award-at-soul-train-awards">T-Pain</a> has announced his first residency in Las Vegas!
On Tuesday (December 19), the Nappy Boy Entertainment CEO took to social media to announce his debut residency at Zouk Nightclub and Ayu Dayclub at Resort World Las Vegas. He posted a video to his Instagram timeline that shows him riding around in a black and pink racing suit as he hops into his customized racecar to the tune of his recent single "Baby Got Brap."
His first show will be at Zouk on February 8, 2024 with more dates coming soon.
"2024 is going to be a great year," T-Pain said. "I've been fortunate to have an amazing career and I've always dreamed of having a residency of my own. I've got some special surprises up my sleeve so Vegas, let's turn up!"

T-Pain joins Jodeci and Wu-Tang Clan, who also recently announced plans for a Vegas residency. Wu-Tang Clan announced their residency last week.
Earlier this year, T-Pain released a covers album called On Top Of The Covers, which included a cut of the country classic &ldquo;Tennessee Whiskey.&rdquo;
On the track, T-Pain offers a unique R&amp;B twist on the 1981 classic without the use of his signature autotuned effects.

T-Pain Announces His First-Ever Las Vegas Residency

Taraji P. Henson has recently opened up about her experience in the industry as a Black female actress. She reflected on her journey through Hollywood and broke out in tears when recounting the treatment she had received. Gayle King sat down with Henson and her The Color Purple cast member, Danielle Brooks for a SiriusXM interview. When asked if she had ever thought about quitting acting, Henson shared that she has reached her limit due to being underpaid. https://youtu.be/GUzqD5UcLwo“I’m just tired of working so hard, being gracious at what I do [and] getting paid a fraction of the cost,” Henson began. “I’m tired of hearing my sisters say the same thing over and over. You get tired. I hear people go, ‘You work a lot.’ Well, I have to. The math ain’t math-ing. When you start working a lot, you have a team. Big bills come with what we do. We don’t do this alone. It’s a whole team behind us. They have to get paid.”She continued to explain that although people hear reports of how much an actor got paid for their work, that money is then divided amongst team members as well as government taxes. “I’m only human," she continued. "Every time I do something and break another glass ceiling, when it’s time to renegotiate, I’m at the bottom again like I never did what I just did and I’m tired. I’m tired. It wears on you. What does that mean? What is that telling me?"Brooks chimed in, "And what is that telling me?"Emotional, Henson exclaimed, "If I can’t fight for them coming up behind me then what the f**k am I doing?”She recalled being told that Black actors and stories “don’t translate overseas.”“I’m tired of hearing that my entire career,” she said. “20 plus years in the game and I hear the same thing and I see what you do for another production, but when it’s time to go to bat for us they don’t have enough money. Taraji P. Henson Considers Quitting Acting Due To Unfair Pay

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul has signed a new bill which is the first step to considering slavery reparations. According to <a href="https://www.rochesterfirst.com/state-politics/governor-hochul-expected-to-sign-slavery-reparations-bill/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Rochester First</a>, the bill will create a commission to get started on its possibility. It’s not a beautiful story, but indeed it is the truth,” she added. “Today, I challenge all New Yorkers to be patriots and rebuke and not excuse our role in benefitting from the institution of slavery.”Hochul made sure to note that this decision isn’t to “correct the past” but to “bend the arc of justice.”Reverend Al Sharpton shared a few words for the crowd. He noted that Hochul’s legislation was an attempt to “heal the wounds” of past trauma. “You cannot heal unless you deal with the wounds, and this bill will put a commission together to be healing the wounds,” Rev. Sharpton said. “Only those that have seen people marginalized for even raising the issue can understand the historic significance of today.”

In promotion of his fist holiday album, A Legacy Christmas, Adam Blackstone performed "Lil Drummer Boy" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
With the help of rising R&amp;B star, Kenyon Dixon, his eight-year-old son, Adam Blackstone Jr. and Justin Wilson II, the group delivered a soulful performance.
The award-winning musical director and his little drummer boys introduced the performance with a minute long instrumental. Then, while walking towards the stage from the audience, Dixon layered on his vocals with the background singers adding on.

Their son's name has multiple meanings for the couple, with David being a nod to Hayes' father and Asher a nod to Pinky's father. Cole and Hayes intended to call their little one Dash, a combination of their son's two names put together.

Cole and Hayes are already parents to daughter D Ella, 2, and son Derrick Hayes Jr., 17 months. Hayes is also dad to two daughters from previous relationships.
In an interview with <a href="https://people.com/slutty-vegan-pinky-cole-welcomes-baby-no-3-exclusive-8415392">PEOPLE</a>, Cole shared that having three children under the age of three still hasn't set in all the way.
"For the last two weeks, every time I looked at my phone, I kept seeing triple digits," Cole told PEOPLE. "And then Dash was born, so it was divine. I can't believe that I am a mom of 3 under 3 all while being a wife and entrepreneur."
"It's not easy, but I wouldn't have it any other way. My children make me better and [I] want to work hard to provide them the life I never had."

The comedian and actress, who celebrated her 44th birthday on December 3, took to social media to show off the photos along with the caption:
